KZ VII aircraft were manufactured by Skandinavisk Aero Industri (SAI) in Copenhagen, Denmark. KZ stands for the leading makers Viggo Kramme and Karl Gustav Zeuthen.
SAI made about 200 aircraft between 1937 and 1954. In total 56 KZ VII were delivered. About 35 have survived until today, the majority are located in Denmark.
Brief history of this KZ VII, serial no. 159:
1947-57 OY-DTY, Denmark: Four different owners. The last one was Ingolf Nielsen, Sønderborg. (Whom later established Cimber Air).
1957-98 D-EGAH, Germany: No. 159 spent most of the time in Germany and haul-up gliders at Kiel Luftsportverein.
1998 OY-DTY, Denmark: The present owner bought the aircraft, and made a complete restoration, which was finished by mid 2001. Late in 2002 the owner and the KZ VII moved to California.
2003-2017 N159KZ, USA: Participated in Copperstate Fly-In, Arizona (2003). In 2005 the KZ VII flew over the Rocky Mountains to AirVenture, Oshkosh, and received a Bronze Lindy Award.
On the return trip No. 159 was heavily damaged in Elko, Nevada (2005) due to carburetor icing. After an 11 year long extensive repair and with a lot of new construction made by the owner the KZ VII flew again in August 2016. Now the engine is equipped with fuel injection, the only known IO-300-D.
2018 OY-DTY, Denmark: The owner and the aircraft moved back to Denmark in November 2017. The new home base for No. 159 is Sydfyns Flyveplads, TÃ¥singe.
